User Groups in South Yorkshire...

Local user groups are a great way of getting the most from the open source software community. Members are from all walks of life and range from complete novices to seasoned software professionals. You can be sure of meeting an enthusiastic and friendly bunch of people who are only too willing to share their experiences and help you to sort out any difficulties.

Many of these groups concentrate on GNU/Linux - so called Linux User Groups or LUGs - but since FLOSS is not restricted to use on Linux systems you will usually find a wide range of software and hardware platforms in use.

User groups frequently run their own programme of events - we will help to publicise these on the d-SY website where possible.

Sheflug was established in 1999 and holds meetings at a number of venues in the Sheffield area. These are usually held monthly on Saturday afternoons, but occasionally members will meet in the evenings to sample the fine ales at the Hillsborough Hotel.

Organiser Richard Ibbotson has been a stalwart of the Linux scene in the region for many years, and working with local support organisations Richard's unique knowledge of the open source community has already helped South Yorkshire punch above its weight in this field.

The group also runs a very active mailing list - for further details see http://www.sheflug.co.uk/

ScunDog (the Scunthorpe & Doncaster Group of linux people) serves the Linux user community in South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

There is a regular programme of meetings, usually on Saturdays, and an active on-line forum. For further details see http://www.scundog.org/

SlugBug (The South Yorkshire GNU/Linux Users Group and BSD Users Group) meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the Rutland Arms in Sheffield (at around 7:30pm).
