What is the FLOSS SIG? Digital South Yorkshire (d-SY) has introduced the first ever business led Free (Libre) and Open Source Software Special Interest Group to be known as FLOSS SIG to help put South Yorkshire at the cutting edge of software usage and availability.
The term "Free (Libre) and Open Source Software" refers to software which gives the user both the freedom to use and redistribute (the 'libre') and the freedom to modify (the 'open source'). FLOSS licensing schemes protect these freedoms for both users and developers of the software. This is in contrast with proprietary 'shrink-wrapped' software where the end-user license agreement (EULA) permits neither redistribution nor modification of the software.
Previously associated with computer wizards and self taught enthusiasts, Free (Libre) and Open Source Software is now going mainstream. In July 2002 the office of the e-Envoy published a policy to encourage the UK government to use FLOSS as a cheap, alternative software. Since 2002 FLOSS has developed considerable following and is gaining significant market share.
Objectives of the FLOSS SIG The formation of the FLOSS SIG will assist South Yorkshire vendor companies in the adoption of FLOSS technology. Emphasis will be on using FLOSS to support the development of new technologies, products and services keeping South Yorkshire ahead of the game. By establishing a Special Interest Group d-SY will provide a single point of access for FLOSS related resources in South Yorkshire. There will also be a regular electronic Newsletter to keep members up to date.
